Collective Rage Act II *
One week after the first wave of demonstrations, protesters returned to the streets of Paris despite restrictions on public gatherings. President Emmanuel Macron had stated that the general recommendation was for demonstrations not to take place in the following days, prompting criticism from opposition parties and civil liberties advocates.
According to figures reported by Le Monde, 110,000 people demonstrated in Paris, as counted by the Interior Ministry, while the CGT estimated attendance at 250,000. Across France, estimates ranged from 410,000 to more than 800,000.
The government deployed 70,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide, 10,000 more than the previous weekend. The security operation included riot police, motorised BRAV-M units, specialised intervention forces such as RAID, GIGN and BRI, as well as soldiers from Operation Sentinelle. Around 20 armoured Centaure vehicles and 15 water cannons were also announced, alongside aerial surveillance, reinforced transport checks and restrictions on public gatherings.
The demonstrations brought together people demanding greater purchasing power, stronger public services and social and fiscal justice. While authorities presented the security measures as necessary to prevent further violence, the restrictions also fuelled debate over the freedom to demonstrate.
